Composition and lighting are what lead to a great photograph  ~ John Shaw

Sometimes a person is fortunate enough to find a venture that becomes a passion. Living in Colorado since 1995, I began exploring the natural beauty around me in my spare time. What I encountered was a wonderland of nature that led me to take up photography in 2003 so that I could permanently capture the scenes that I stumbled upon. Traveling to different national and state parks, I continue to be amazed at what each locale offers, ranging from wildlife, to flowers, to the many landscapes that allow for photographic impressions.

You will likely note the fact that the majority of images on this site are of wildlife. This is no accident. Although landscapes can be dramatic, it is the variety of birds and animals, and their behaviors, that tend to excite me the most. Every day in the field offers a new opportunity to catch a different behavior or expression. Through photography, I have come to understand just how different two animals from the same species can act. Wildlife also offers opportunities for humor, and I have come to suspect that there are truly some characters among our wild friends!

I began taking images after 25 years of nothing but the typical tourist snapshots and family photos that most of us do. My photo gear "arsenal" was limited to an old Pentax K1000 and a couple of lenses from the 70's. As I began to develop a love of nature photography, I decided to move up to more modern equipment and had a steep learning curve......so much had changed in the roughly 25 years I had been absent from the "gear scene". I made a choice to move into the Nikon camp because of the excellent choice of bodies and lenses available from Nikon and from third party manufacturers. There is always a desire to buy the latest camera, lenses, and other gear, but I find that my current set of equipment allows me to accomplish much of what I have set out to do. I'm sure that I will add and subtract from the current list, but here's what I have as of October 2005:
